Liz leaned forward and put her hands on Martha’s knees. “You know something.”

Martha tapped the tip of her nose with her index finger and narrowed one eye. “What?”

“Listen, if this is going to put you in some type of compromising situation, don’t tell us. Or if you’re not sure and want to refer—”

“Not necessary. Just thinking if any of them are still alive or around here.” Martha winked. “I’m thinking not.”

“We know at least one is dead.” Liz smirked.

“Or do we?” Martha winked again, but this time with a wicked smile.

“So?” Will leaned forward with anticipation.

Martha refilled their glasses. “Well, from what I know, the McCallisters were regular Yankees and their family landed somewhere in Boston in the early 1800s. A few of them came down this way and settled into Providence, then Havenport. They were a big family. Lots of boys. But there was one who went against everything his parents set out to do. You know the type of kid. A pain in the ass no matter how good the parents are to him. And in the McCallister clan, that would be—”

“Frederick,” Will said.

“Bingo.” Martha touched the tip of her nose with one finger and pointed to Will with another.

“So what happened?” Liz leaned closer. She wanted to hear everything Martha knew.

“Frederick ran off and joined the Confederate army. The family, appalled as they were, loved him. He was blood.”

“Was he killed in battle?” Liz hung on to every word.

“Not sure. I guess you can dig him up and see what you find. From what I know, the family didn’t speak much after Frederick enlisted with the opposition. But I don’t know a mother alive who would turn her back on her child, so it makes sense that he would be close to her in death.”

“You mean there might be more dead bodies in my yard?” Liz gasped.

Martha laughed. “No, the rest of the family is in the town cemetery. At least the parents and some of the siblings. I’m not sure if there are any descendants floating around. Probably. But I don’t know of them.”

Liz leaned back and crossed her arms. Will wrapped his arm around her shoulders and hugged her.

“Maybe your first instinct is correct. It might be a monument. I doubt the family would risk burying a son who fought on the other side on their property.”

Martha stood and smoothed her jeans. “You never know. People are always finding stuff in the ground and buildings around this town.”

True. Liz thought of the journal she meant to finish reading. What were the odds of Adam finding something that old in his basement?

She looked at Will. Yes, what were the odds of finding someone to share her life with at this stage of her existence?

It wasn’t time to question things, even if that included the uncertainty of a dead guy in her yard.

“Martha? What would you do?” Liz shifted. Shivers ran down her spine as she thought of Dead Fred as weed fertilizer, but on the other hand, it seemed dishonorable to exhume his body.
